What is the difference between a Brazilian Blowout and a Keratin Treatment? 

Brazilian Blowout and Keratin Treatments are semi-permanent hair smoothing treatments that eliminate frizz and enhance shine. These treatments may be performed on all hair types, including color-treated and curly hair. They may make your hair easier to straighten, but they are not considered straightening treatments. Both treatments are sealed into the hair cuticle through the heating process (blow-dry and flat iron), resulting in hair that is smoother, shinier, and more manageable. Results are cumulative: the more either treatment is applied, the healthier hair becomes.

The main difference between the two is the composition of the product itself. The Keratin Treatment is a keratin protein solution and the Brazilian Blowout solution contains a combination of amino acids and protein. Both treatments improve hair texture and strength.

How long does a Brazilian Blowout or Keratin Treatment last:

Depending on your at-home care, either treatment may last 2-4 months. Washing with a sulfate-free shampoo will help extend the life of your treatment. Swimming in the ocean or pool will compromise the treatment. We recommend wetting your hair and then coating it with conditioner or a deep conditioning mask before swimming. 

When can I wash my hair after a Brazilian Blowout or Keratin Treatment?

For Brazilian Blowout, you can immediately wash your hair, exercise, and put it in a ponytail or clip. While most keratin treatments have waiting periods, the treatment from Keratin Complex that we use at Live By The Sword Salon also has no wait time. You can wash your hair the next day and it can immediately be pulled back or put in clips. However, we suggest waiting at least a day or two before washing so you can get the most out of your salon-fresh style!

Can I dye my hair after a Brazilian Blowout or keratin treatment?

With your Brazilian Blowout, you can have any color service before the treatment to help seal in the color and add shine. Color services can also be performed before Keratin Complex treatment. Consult with your stylist to see if your hair color can be done the same day as your keratin treatment as you may need to wait two weeks after keratin to get your color done. 

Can I get a Keratin Treatment or Brazilian Blowout if I have curly hair?

Absolutely! Both keratin treatments and Brazilian blowouts can be great options for curly hair—just keep in mind these are smoothing treatments, not straightening treatments. Their purpose is to reduce frizz, add shine, and make your hair easier to style, not to permanently remove your curls.

If performed correctly, these treatments should not cause damage to your natural curl pattern. Instead, they work by coating the hair cuticle with smoothing proteins that temporarily relax the curl. An Express Keratin treatment is an express service that will give you smoothing results in a fraction of the time. This is a great option to have done after any coloring service to lock in color and deliver radiant shine. Results from this treatment may last up to 6 weeks with the proper at home care. You will need to wait at least 8 hours before getting your hair wet after this service.
